Ban calls for continued calm atmosphere
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon today welcomed the peaceful conduct of the presidential election in Togo, which took place on Saturday.
“As Togo awaits the final results, the Secretary-General encourages all political leaders and segments of society to continue to maintain the peaceful atmosphere that has prevailed throughout the electoral process,” said a statement released by Mr. Ban’s spokesperson.
The statement urged all candidates and their supporters to resolve any disputes that might arise through established legal procedures.
“The Secretary-General calls on all political leaders and their supporters to resolve any disputes that may arise from the electoral process through constitutional and peaceful means,” Mr. Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson said in a statement released in New York.
“The Secretary-General reiterates the commitment of the United Nations to support the electoral process and the efforts of the Togolese to strengthen democratic order in their country,” the statement added.
